Hope and coffee
What hopes do we hold for a climate changed world - and can hope be trusted to guide our way? Kyla Brettle turns on the coffee machine, opens the books and tackles this tricky question.
Kyla’s notes:
It’s autumn in our corner of the world, and after finally publishing a pilot episode for our podcast at the end of 2021 (to great fanfare and much celebration) - Endgame is back - wading into into developing, recording and editing the various through-lines that will come together to make of the rest of the series.
It’s been deep - Rob gave me a copy of John Wiseman’s book, ‘Hope and Courage in the Climate Crisis’ just before the Xmas break (no rest for the the wicked) and since, I have been feeling my way into various ideas about ‘hope’ for the show… ’hope’ is clearly a complex and fraught kaleidoscope of lenses through which to examine the climate crisis - and so perfect for Endgame.
My wanderings have led me to Jennifer Atkinson’s podcast ‘Facing it’ a narrative essay about eco grief and loss as well as the BBC’s essay collection ’The Deep Connections that heal trauma’. I recommend both. But any decent dive into hope in the time of climate crisis, however, must include the lyrical and poignant work of Rebecca Solnit - and that’s where I’m off to next. But in the meantime, we hope you like this audio postcard testing the waters of ‘hope’.
There has also been movement at the station of our shire community’s plan to collectively transition to more sustainable systems. A group of locals who came together after our shire’s declaration of a climate emergency have come up with a plan to both reduce emission and become more resilient over the next eight years. It’s called the Wararack Initiatives and a call out has been issued seeking volunteers prepared to help steer the project into its next phase. Rob and I will be tracking the project as part of Endgame.
